War criminal alert: Dick Cheney will be at the Union League Club (65 W. Jackson, Chicago) this Monday! Read why he is a war criminal, and why “if there were any justice to be found in this deranged country, Dick Cheney would have penned his pesitferous, self-serving little memoir by the light of a bare bulb inside the cell of a federal prison.” Why didn’t he? Look to Obama’s policy of “looking forward, not backward” that gives Cheney complete impunity. Then forward this email or our Facebook event to a dozen friends and join us at 11 am Monday (to 12:30 pm) to protest his visit and demand that his next appearance is behind bars! World Can’t Wait, 8th Day Center for Justice and the Illinois Coalition against Torture will be there – hope to see you too at 11 am on Monday.
We also invite you to a special screening of The Response, a powerful film based on actual transcripts of Guantanamo Bay military tribunals. In the film, three military officers must decide the fate of a suspected enemy combatant. Is he guilty of providing material support to Al Qaeda and responsible for the deaths of several American soldiers? Or is he an innocent victim of circumstances as he claims? The screening at 2 pm on Oct 1 at Sulzer Regional Library (4455 N. Lincoln Ave, Chicago) will be followed by discussion with Len Goodman, attorney for Guantanamo detainees, and Kevin Gosztola, The Dissenter at FireDogLake, who has written extensively on Wikileaks.
And we’re building for a powerful Midwest regional demonstration on October 8 to protest the 10th anniversary of the US war of terror against Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world. Mark your calendars: Noon, Saturday, Oct. 1, Michigan Avenue and Congress in Chicago.
Sustain World Can’t Wait until together we stop the crimes of this government! Will you take responsibility to end the crimes that are being carried out in your name? NONE of what you read about in this newsletter, on our websites or in Debra Sweet’s newsletters is possible without all of us.
This month, 58 new sustainers are needed, contributing $1,300 per month to expand the resistance when it is needed more than ever. Sustain at $2 a month, or $20, or $200. It’s easy, it just takes a minute, and it will make a world of difference. And please let us know why, and invite friends to do the same!
