Do you remember where you were as midnight approached on the last day of 2011? That was when President Obama signed The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which has now codified some of the worst abuses of Guantanamo, and has given the military and the chief executive the power to hold anyone, anywhere in the world, without charges or trial. Some have said that “Guantanamo has come to Main Street,” around the globe.
We don’t have to stand for this! Join with us and hundreds of other Chicagoans when we speak out in Federal Plaza at 3 pm on Wednesday, January 11, to say “Ten Years Too Many – Shut Down Guantanamo Now!” Please sign up to join us here on Facebook and invite your friends too. We need everyone who can come out to be there to say NO to Guantanamo, torture, the refusal to prosecute war criminals, and now the National Defense Authorization Act. Say YES to resistance to all these crimes by taking part in this action!
And you can do even more to get involved. Please join us at a teach-in on torture, indefinite detention, and prosecuting war criminals responsible for them on January 7, from 8:30 to 5 pm, at Grace Place, 637 S. Dearborn, Chicago. World Can’t Wait will be giving a presentation on prosecuting war criminals, both past and current, at 3 pm. We hope to see you there.
In 2011, many people learned that we have power when we raise our voices, together, and resist. What better time and place than here and now to do just that?
On Saturday, January 14, Andy Worthington, the world’s leading expert on Guantanamo, will be coming to Chicago for the first time ever to screen his film, Outside the Law: Stories from Guantanamo, at 1 pm at Loyola Law Chicago. Please sign up here to attend the Andy Worthington film screening and discussion on January 14 and invite your friends. If you do not receive Facebook invitations, please email us your RSVP confirmation if you’re planning to attend so we have a realistic count.
You don’t want to miss this chance to hear from Andy directly!
