With just over a day remaining before tomorrow’s important March Against the Wars, sponsored by Chicago World Can’t Wait and others, you may encounter the question, What difference does it make? Why go out and demonstrate?
Why does it matter? Because people in Iraq and Afghanistan need to see that there are people in this country who oppose these crimes being committed against them in our name. Because the world can’t read that button on your backpack. Because what we do defines who we are. Because we must come together as a community in the streets, to stand up and be counted.
But don’t just take our word for it. We recently learned other people are also concerned about who we stand with and what we do.
We heard from a friend who accepted our invitation on Facebook, only to receive a call from people in AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) saying, “What? That’s not you who signed up for that anti-war march, is it?”
At that moment, our friend confronted the consequences of the decision to take a public stand. He learned that we are being watched and our actions send a message – and sometimes upset powerful people. Before that call, he may have been ambivalent about participating in an anti-war march. Now he is determined to be there.
Will you join us?
The March Against the Wars starts at 3 pm tomorrow, Sunday, March 18, on Devon Avenue. Chicago WCW’s NO War On Iran contingent will gather a half-hour early, at 2:30 pm, in front of the Ghareeb Nawaz restaurant, 2032 W. Devon. This march will be a unique opportunity to demonstrate in solidarity with the people in this heavily South Asian neighborhood to say Enough! to these wars for empire.
So take a public stand, join our Facebook event and invite friends there to do the same. Send this email to more friends.
And see you tomorrow!
This is a map of the American military presence surrounding the 70 million people of Iran, who are already feeling the effects of US and EU sanctions that have driven the value of their currency down and the price of basic food and fuel through the roof. It is the people who are suffering, not the military or the regime there.
NO war on IRAN ! NO sanctions! NO intervention! NO assassinations!
